On producing "C. Husal Utes: Idea Man" and "Syncopator Familias"

I’m pleased to announce that I am now serving as a producer for two projects - a web series and a podcast. This marks an exciting new chapter for me as a writer and filmmaker.

The web series, “C. Husal Utes: Idea Man” is a short video series available on YouTube. It features Greg Richter playing a Victorian man commenting on our strange modern way of living. Greg, who also happens to be my husband, came up with this character a while ago. Our 19th Century farmhouse in Alabama serves as the perfect setting for some of the videos. Other times, he performs in public. The series has been well-received thus far, and I’m proud to have been added to IMDb as a producer for C. Husal Utes: Idea Man. Be sure to look me up under Laura J Axelrod.

The other project is a podcast with Greg, “Syncopator Familias.” In this podcast, Greg and I talk about modern Christianity and comment on current news stories. I play the role of a skeptic, or as I like to call it, “the person who questions things.” I am more of an unconventional Christian. If you know my work, I grew up Catholic and with a certain amount of religious trauma. It hasn’t stopped me from believing in God, but I do have more of a mystical approach to faith. As a journalist, I’m looking forward to discussing and hashing out intriguing ideas.

On Adding the J. to Laura J. Axelrod

A number of years ago, I took a break from my writing career. It was 2016. President Trump had just been elected. I wanted to isolate myself completely and pretend the world didn’t exist. Of course, I kept writing, but there wasn’t any point in talking about my projects. I just wanted for time to pass and, hopefully at some point, things would get better.

Well, we all know what happened. Pandemic and the gradual reemergence of life again after spending it inside our respective houses. It’s taken me a while to move forward, including adding the J. to my name, but life is too short to not live your best life. I was happiest when I was working, making art and writing. Joy is my motivator these days, along with the desire to live to my fullest potential. I used to wait for a project to be perfect. Now, I want to communicate authentically. I’d rather talk to people, not gatekeepers. It’s a big difference, one that I’m sure I’ll elaborate more on it in the future.
